Artist Statement: Lisa C. Allen
I find my work within the process of painting. I have no preconceptions; I am led by my subconscious mind. I am looking for organic structure with power and presence, and I work through many layers of paint to achieve this quality. My work is often defined by what it’s not: it’s not decorative, or particularly hard-edge or about geometric patterning, or concept-driven; if it becomes somewhat referential at times, the reference is found, not understood from the beginning of the process. I find my process to be difficult and unyielding, but ultimately satisfying when it produces something that has its own unique personality and meaning.
